How ice dams actually happen: heat escapes into a poorly vented attic and warms the roof unevenly. Snow melts up top, runs down, and refreezes at the cold roof edge, building a dam of ice. New meltwater pools behind that dam and pushes backward, UP and UNDER your shingles. That’s when water finds your ceiling.

Common questions about ice dams
Should I knock the icicles and ice off myself?
No. Chipping ice off a roof edge tears shingles and gutters, and standing under it is genuinely dangerous. The ice is the symptom; the attic is the problem. Fix the ventilation and the ice stops forming.
Do heat cables fix ice dams?
Heat cables melt drainage channels through the ice. They manage the symptom, cost electricity all winter, and do nothing about the warm attic causing it. They can help in stubborn spots, but ventilation and insulation are the actual cure.
Can this be fixed without replacing the whole roof?
Often, yes. Ventilation can frequently be corrected on an existing roof. If your roof is near replacement age anyway, building the fix into the new roof is the smartest money. The free inspection tells you which situation you’re in.
